CQI audit checklists, training requirements, OEM-specific expectations, and integration with IATF 16949, along with free downloadable templates for CQI-9 (Heat Treat) & CQI-11 (Plating).
📋 1. CQI Audit Checklists (AIAG Format)
(Key questions from each standard to assess compliance.)
🔹 CQI-9 Heat Treat Checklist (Sample)
✅ Process Control
Are TUS (Temperature Uniformity Surveys) performed annually per AMS 2750?
Are SAT (System Accuracy Tests) done daily for critical thermocouples?
Is there a documented reaction plan for out-of-spec furnace conditions?
✅ Equipment Maintenance
Are quench oil samples tested monthly for viscosity & contamination?
Are pyrometers calibrated per ISO 17025 or Nadcap?
✅ Personnel Competency
Are heat treat operators certified to AMS 2750 or equivalent?

🔹 CQI-11 Plating Checklist (Sample)
✅ Chemical Management
Are bath concentrations checked & recorded hourly?
Is there a preventive maintenance schedule for anode replacement?
✅ Adhesion Testing
Are peel tests (ASTM B571) conducted on a random sample daily?
Is porosity testing performed per ASTM B809?
✅ Environmental Compliance
Are wastewater discharge logs maintained per EPA regulations?
🎓 2. Training Requirements for CQI Implementation
CQI Standard | Required Training | Certification Body |
CQI-9 (Heat Treat) | AMS 2750, Nadcap Audit Prep | PRI (Performance Review Institute) |
CQI-11 (Plating) | IPC-4552 (PCB Plating), ASTM B117 (Corrosion) | SAE International |
CQI-15 (Welding) | AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) | American Welding Society |
CQI-17 (Soldering) | IPC J-STD-001 (Soldering) | IPC |
CQI-23 (Molding) | Scientific Molding (RJG Certification) | RJG Inc. |
Tip: Many OEMs require supplier employees to complete AIAG-approved CQI courses before audits.
🚗 3. OEM-Specific CQI Expectations
OEM | Key CQI Requirements | Additional Standards |
Ford | Q1 Certification mandates CQI-9/11/12 compliance | MMOG/LE for logistics |
GM | BIQS (Built-In Quality Supply Base) requires CQI-15 & CQI-20 | GM 1927-21 (Welding) |
Toyota | TPS (Toyota Production System) + CQI-21 Lean Assessment | JIS D 0201 (Corrosion) |
Stellantis | SQAM (Supplier Quality Assurance Manual) references CQI-9/11 | VDA 6.3 Process Audit |
VW/Audi | VDA 6.3 + CQI-12 for coatings | TL 226 (Paint Standards) |
Note: Some OEMs require customer-specific checklists (e.g., Ford’s Heat Treat Scorecard).
🔄 4. Integrating CQI with IATF 16949
Clause 8.5.1.1 (Control of Production) requires:✔ CQI Special Processes (Heat Treat, Plating, Welding) must be validated & monitored.✔ Risk-Based Thinking (CQI-19 Subordinate FMEA aligns with IATF FMEA requirements).✔ Internal Audits must include CQI process assessments (not just ISO 9001).
Example Integration:
IATF 16949 Audit (Clause 8.5.1.1) → CQI-9 Compliance (Furnace Validations).
PFMEA (Process FMEA) → CQI-20 (Problem Solving) for corrective actions.
